October 6, Humboldt State University
A-side: Humboldt 15, OSU 20
B-side: Humboldt 10, OSU 27The OSU Ruggers started off the 2001 season with a 20-15 victory over Humbolt State this past Saturday. After only two weeks of practice, compared to the 6 weeks Humbolt State had enjoyed, the Beaver ruggers had just enough to beat the visitors from California. While we missed several scoring opportunities due to poor timing and poor decisions, we put together a fairly cohesive effort and played a satisfactory first match.
If we can put it all together this could be a very very good team. We have forwards who run the ball with power, a former high school All American, a Combined Services inside center who crashes the ball hard, and two excellent wings that have transferred from other schools. We are working hard on developing our fly-half/scrum-half combination but have good young men to fill those positions. Fullback is also up for grabs but I do have good athletes vying for the spot.
The Killer B's also defeated Humbolt by a score of 27-10. Considering a number of these players were in their first game this is an amazing accomplishment. It bodes well for the future of the program.

Yeah, the rivalry continues... Alumni haven't lost since Quaker graduated--that's a long time! Hopefully the alumni get a better challenge this year.
